We walked around to the new lifeboat station last Saturday afternoon (1st November) to watch the official opening at 2pm. Tried to stress to our two young daughters that they were actually watching a significant event in Hoylake’s local history !

The invited guests were gathered inside the temporary fencing and a fair sized crowd had gathered outside too. Live music was provided by the Port Sunlight Lyceum Brass Band.

After the official opening by our local MP Stephen Hesford, all were invited inside the brand new building for a look around and slice of cake.

I understand that the transfer from the current station to the new one will be completed over the next few weeks. It’ll be good to see this fine new building being put to good use soon!

The photos I took of the ceremony aren’t great but I’ll get around to loading them anyways.

Further to my post about a fortnight ago the remaining pieces of the water fountain have now been installed (it was last Sunday actually).

I took these photos on a rather grey and damp early Monday morning so apologies for not showing Hoylake off in a better light!

I spotted the blokes unloading their van on Sunday morning on the way back from my run.

Though earlier in the week the fountain had some tarpaulin or heavy sheets draped over it for some reason - maybe to protect the newly fitted bits on the top?

I think I’m correct in saying that a third Queen Victoria head has been fitted and perhaps a naming plaque is going to fitted at some point - for now a blank disc is in place.

Anyways, it looking rather smart don’t you think?

The water fountain that was taken away on the back of a lorry in February is now back in place on the promenade at the bottom of Hoyle Road.

You’ll notice it’s no longer black and yellow and more importantly you’ll notice that the actual centre stand and water dish have not (yet) been replaced. I’ve no idea if there’s more to come? The water dish and stand were separate items to the main stand so perhaps they’re still being renovated.

Although you can’t tell, I know that beneath the concrete base there’s a water pipe with a stop-end on it. I spotted the end of the pipe lying there before the base was replaced …I’ve got a photo too somewhere. So even if the water dish is to be replaced I can’t imagine the fountain will actually be working.

Personally, I like the colour scheme - I wonder if it’s how it was originally painted?

There’s a couple of bits missing in the top too - Queen Victoria isn’t there on all four sides. Eagle eyed viewers of the real thing might notice something about the gargoyle dragons (or whatever they are) - three have open mouths whilst one has his/hers firmly shut.

Notice the rusty water stain - it’s only been a week!

Here’s a view of the inside with the white and yellow flower that it’s in each corner.

The guide price is £800,000 - £900,000 and of course the purchaser will need additional cash to do something with the building. The auction listing details:

The property may afford potential for a variety of alternative uses. We are informed by the Vendor that under existing planning guidelines, planning would be considered for a number of uses including refurbishment of the existing building as a nursing home, new build nursing homes development, boutique hotel, office accommodation and use as a single dwelling (new build or refurbishment) all subject to obtaining the necessary planning consents. Architect drawings of a proposed new build 42 bedroom nursing home are available from the Auctioneer’s office upon request, however prospective purchasers are advised to make their own planning enquiries with the local authority.

The Somerfields business was recently purchased by the Co-op group so maybe they decided to keep their Hoylake branch open instead of Somerfield? Shame, personally I think the Hoylake Co-op is a dreary old shop.

I’ve heard a few people mention that the Somerfield building (remember when it was Kwik-Save - whatelse has it been?) is going to become a Home Bargains store. Looks like we’ll be seeing more of these bargain stores …I read somewhere that Aldi are looking at building a store in Moreton on the site where the 3 Counties car sales garage is. And last year they were looking to build a store in West Kirby - I’m not sure what’s happening with that.

I first mentioned about the redevelopment plans for the Kings Gap Court hotel back in May and I see that whilst we were away on holiday there’s been some news. Unfortunately, I missed the public meeting when detailed plans of the proposed revamp were on display. Did anyone get chance to see them …what did you think?

I gather the chaps running the business behind the scheme are Simon Matthews-Williams and Paul Bolton. Their company is (I think) called Sanguine Hospitality …I note that if you try that as a .co.uk it redirects (as we say in the trade) to another of their hotels Hoole Hall. I gather that Mr Matthews-Williams is a former boss of the Liverpool Crown Plaza and Mr Bolton is a property developer (if you’re reading chaps it’d be great to hear from you!).

From what I read in The Wirral News, the £7m revamp will:

retain the original house

include a brasserie restaurant

include a bar

include a function room for 100 people

see that part of hotel remains open during the revamp

In my earlier post I mentioned an underground car park - anyone know what that actually is?

The company behind the proposed new West Kirby hotel seem to be facing some local criticism - will the Kings Gap redevelopment meet with local approval or disapproval I wonder?

By the way, did you know that in google you can do something like this: define:sanguine and you’ll see that sanguine can mean confidently optimistic and cheerful

Having decided after some thought that I’ll end up going potty being sat in front of a computer monitor for years to come (and I’ve already being doing it for 20 years!) I’ve decided to setup another business in addition to our internet marketing company.

Something that gets me out and about is needed so I’m setting up Wirral Lawns and we’ll see how it goes. I’ll be offering a general, reliable service covering lawn mowing, weeding and the like and ideally I’m looking for clients in the areas of Hoylake, West Kirby, Meols …or more generally West Wirral I guess!

So if you know of someone who is looking for a gardener feel free to give me a mention - thanks!

I can only just about remember the Hoylake Outdoor swimming pool that used to be on the site of our new lifeboat station. I moved to Meols in 1976 and can remember riding my bike around the outside of the old baths with my mates.

I’ll look for some other photos another time but I have managed to stumble upon some old photos that the BBC has here that I thought I’d mention to you. They’re not great quality but worth a look anyways!

Who was that lady I wonder? And was it referred to as Hoylake Lido?
