[...] Some Hoylake locals are planning forthcoming street parties for the Royal Wedding, the Big Lunch and perhaps the Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012. But Hoylake residents were having street parties years ago. The above images, kindly sent in by Ruth Treece show 1945 V.E. Day celebrations in Chapel Street. That curvy brick building in the road was an air-raid shelter I think and I’ve previously featured another photo of the same street party in this post. [...]

I've no idea what the thing with the 'H' on it was, but what I can
tell you is that you see the 3 women who are standing to the far
right of the picture, I am almost certain that the one to the far
right in the summery dress is my auntie Mabel Dale (nee Beckett) who
is still alive and living in Meols (she has not got back to me yet to
confirm it is her); I am presuming the lady in the middle is their
mother and the lady to her immediate left in the long dark coat is my
mother Betty Baldock (nee Beckett) who died a few years ago and lived
all her life in Hoylake and Meols. Their main family home was the
house on Birkenhead Road at the junction with Chapel Road which is near to
where they are standing and for many years afterwards it became the
chiropodists (foot hospital). Small world! Thanks John.
Regards,

From my recollection the building with the letter H on it was an air raid shelter which was located at the top end of Chapel Road. When we were kids we used to play around it , I think it was removed sometime in the late 1940`s
