Here’s a few items of news while I’m in catch-up mode:
The application to demolish an existing property on Beach Road (pictured) and replace it with a new dwelling has been withdrawn. The property is still on the market.
As expected, an application to demolish the Hoylake Presbyterian Church in Alderley Road and build six new houses has been submitted.
The former Scatchard’s Wine Merchants in Albert Road is now a tattoo parlour.
Also in Albert Road, Nine Leaves loose-leaf tea house has recently opened.
BTR Liverpool has recently opened on the corner of Market Street and Melrose Avenue (formerly Everite Windows showroom). BTR Liverpool (Born To Run) organise several running events throughout the year including the Liverpool Half Marathon and the Liverpool Santa Dash.
Market Street Christmas decorations were good this year with not one but two decorated trees, one at either end of the road. I have heard a couple of slight criticisms that the decorations were (are) still on in mid-January. I did see workmen taking down the tree lights earlier this week, though the trees are still up at time of writing.
Funding for benches
The Wirral West Constituency Committee has made funding available for new benches across the area, and residents can suggest where they should go.
The Special Places project will eventually see up to a dozen benches installed in locations chosen by the public.
Cllr. Jeff Green, Chair of the Constituency Committee, said: “In coming up with the idea for this project, the Committee was keen to use its funding for small improvements which can make a big difference and to highlight the fantastic places which make Wirral West so special. We want the public to tell us about the places and locations which are special to them; a place where they would like to be able to come, sit down and take in the view or surroundings. All residents need to do to get involved is to tell the Constituency Team where they think a bench should be located.”
- Email email@example.com
- Write to Helen Gallagher at West Kirby Library and One Stop Shop, Grange Road, West Kirby, Wirral CH48 4HZ
- Tweet pictures with the hashtag #WWSpecialPlaces
- Post a suggestion on the Love Wirral Facebook site at https://www.facebook.com/lovewirral.
£5,000 is available for the project, which is expected to result in 2 new benches in each of the constituency’s 5 wards. People should get in touch with their ideas for locations before the end of February 2016.
While we thankfully haven’t seen major flooding as in other parts of the country, the heavy rains have caused some annoying, localised flooding over the winter:
- The parking bays by St Luke’s Church always retain rain water
- Market Street floods by Hoose Bar (opposite the Co-op)
- Birkenhead Road always floods towards Meols despite an additional drain being added a couple of years ago
The site has been a bit quiet of late what with a family bereavement, Christmas, and me running out of steam a little. Anyway, we’re back now. And talking of running, I’ve managed to secure a place in the London Marathon so I think I’ll run for a couple of charities. I won’t nag, but I’ll mention I’m after sponsors in due course.
