Following on from the very first Have Your Say where you can still comment of course, the team at HVL would like to hear your answers/thoughts to this question:
What words would you use to describe Hoylake’s personality or character?
For instance, do you think Hoylake is welcoming and friendly? What do people think of when Hoylake crops up in conversation? Is Hoylake missing a vibrancy that perhaps others believe West Kirby has got? Is it still a sea-fishing village at heart?
Feel free to share your thoughts below. You can also email HVL directly at info@hoylakevillage.org.uk
Friendly, serene, relaxing and peacefull with lots of potential.
However, dog fouling is a major problem along the prom, which is such a shame, and rather shocking and disappointing that local people do not take pride in their environment. This is a major turn off for visitors and locals alike, and damn right irresponsible.
The pearl of the north west
“a place where you can be yourself”
My key words:
Diverse – buildings old and new, grand and humble; a good mixture of people from different socio-economic backrounds, incomers and those whose family has been there for generations; town, coast and countryside.
Friendly – people say ‘hello!’.
Open horizons – could it be England’s biggest beach?; fantastic open beach outlook; the open character of the Carrs; views of ships coming and going from the Mersey to the far corners of the planet.
Bracing – the finest, freshest air to invigorate and refresh the tiredest soul.
On your other questions:
There has though until recently been a sense that Hoylake’s best days are behind it – the beach has silted up, the visitors no longer come, swimming pool and other public amenities are run down or closed, the parks and public spaces have been neglected, the shops are not what they might be, the finest grand houses and many characterful village style buildings have been lost, civic control was lost in 1974,there has been no strong vision for Hoylake’s future and its reinvention.
Now perhaps things are looking brighter with the town back on the international golfing map, the re-emergence of Liverpool, long overdue Council interest in regeneration projects, grassroots resident initiatives such as Hoylake & Meols in Bloom or the model boating lake, a new RNLI station, some improved public realm, new places to eat and drink, hotel developments and now the emergence of a new and dynamic resident group in the form of Hoylake Village Life.
West Kirby may currently have more town centre buzz as you suggest but does it have as much community vibe, attract such passion and have quite as much special character as Hoylake? Or is it perhaps just a little bit smug and self-satisfied?
