Friday Photo: RLGC Clubhouse
The above photo of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club clubhouse is the last of the batch of early 1930s photos kindly sent to me by Paul Doleman. On first glance the building doesn't seem to have changed much at all. Compared to a more recent photo (below - which isn't quite from the same angle), you can see that the two clocks are still in place and a few windows have been altered or removed. I don't think the single storey building on the left in the old photo exists any more ...but I can't … ...more

Shopkeepers Stories: Hoylake School of Dance
Hoylake School of Dance (HSOD) has been teaching dance since March, 1996 and up until earlier this year held all of its varied dance and drama classes at Hoylake Community Centre. The school offers dance, drama and singing classes for children and adults. Earlier this year Clare Calder-Mellors (Principal) and husband Mike Mellors made the decision to take on what is possibly the biggest commercial building in Market Street (maybe the Punch Bowl is bigger?). The Jon David furniture shop was … ...more
Looking For: Roberts family, Chapel Road
J Paterson (nee Gregory) writes: My late fathers sister and family lived at 13 Chapel Rd. My brother lived with them for some of the war and attended the infants school for a short time. They were John and Lena Roberts, John junior and Helen. John senior had a greengrocers shop somewhere near and I used to help some times in my school holidays-this would be about 1957. My family lived in Croydon I have tried on many occasions to find out by writing if my cousin still lives there, and have … ...more

Book Review: Hoylake Then & Now
I've previously mentioned a new book penned by local author and historian Jim O'Neil - Hoylake Then and Now. The publishers, The History Press, kindly sent me a copy to read and review here on HoylakeJunction.com. The 95-page book, one of a series for various locations across the country, features then and now photographs of different areas of Hoylake. Starting at Kings Gap roundabout (which incidentally isn't the start of Hoylake - that's further up Meols Drive) the book takes you through … ...more
