Hoylake Cottage would like to thank its Summer Challengers, who braved this Summer’s terrible weather and who have to date raised over £10,000 for Hoylake Cottage.
Charity cyclists made use of 131 years of cycling practice to take on the ultimate challenge, cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Nigel Lanceley, 62, and Chris Moore, 69, made it from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 14 days in June on a mammoth charity cycle ride in aid of Hoylake Cottage and Claire House.
The men carried their own kit the entire length of the country in a pedal powered trek that lasted two weeks. Their adventure involved taking 3 ferries, crossing countless bridges and they pedalled through 23 counties. Chris Moore said “Apart from a few minor mechanical problems, one puncture and one tyre blow-out, all proceeded smoothly, give or take some unpleasantly wet weather”.
“Donors have already been extremely generous but we are keeping the site open for a few more weeks in case anybody else would like to support our chosen charities – Hoylake Cottage for the care of older people and those with dementia and Claire House for the comfort of terminally ill children and their families”.

Hoylake Cottage’s very own intrepid fundraiser, Sarah Green, 38, put on her wetsuit and took part in the Great North Swim, which took place in June in Lake Windermere, in the Lake District.
The event was reduced from three days to just one, as a result of extreme weather throughout the region, and Sarah swam a mile in water which was only 16 degrees Celsius. It was the first time that Sarah had ever taken part in an open water event.
Sarah said “After Christmas, I decided that I needed a new challenge – open water swimming was it. I’ve managed to get into my wetsuit, and trained in the sea off North Wales as well as many miles in the pool. On the day, I was nervous as there were over 300 of us starting at the same time, but once I got into my rhythm I began to enjoy myself! The sharks and monsters that my sons kept teasing me about didn’t materialise which was a relief! It has been a fantastic opportunity to get a bit fitter whilst helping a cause so close to my heart.”
