A big thanks to Tom Singleton for covering this years annual Tug O War that took place on the beach opposite the Sailing Club. Tom reports:
We went down to witness the annual Tug O War showdown between the local sailing club and the lifeboat crew on Hoylake beach at noon on boxing day (got no choice really, as bro-in-law is on the pulling team with the lifeboat crew!)
This is now in it’s 37th year and the atmoshere was as good as ever with a healthy dose of local rivalary between the teams and spectators alike, and it pulls in quite a crowd nowadays – it’s also quite a good fundraiser for the RNLI with lots of collection buckets out. Contest is the best of 3 . The stakes are high with a pint of Guiness each for the winning team and a half pint for the losers and the prestigious Slater Teapot to sit on the winners’ mantlepiece for the year.
A few shots, firstly the Lifeboat Crew and then the Sailing Club in round 1. A fiercely fought first round which stood at stalemate for a good three minutes before the lifeboat lads found a chink in the armour of the sailing club and pulled the red rag past the post for a one – nil lead.
Round two , and the lifeboat team smelt victory from the outset and went hellbent on capitalising on their counterparts bruised egos and palms, and it paid off as they put the sailing club out of their misery swiftly and with the minimum of fuss to claim the pints and the teapot.
As things stand the sailing club are now just one victory ahead of the lifeboat crew since the first showdown in 1972, so next year should be a spicy encounter
