Snow lands on Hoylake

queens park snow

A heavy, though relatively brief snowfall blanketed Hoylake late on Friday. Snow fell heavily for a couple of hours on Friday evening, leaving roads, including Market Street difficult to drive on. Since then there has not been any further snowfall but freezing temperatures have left many side roads very icy.

The above photo was taken at around 9.30am on Saturday morning in Queens Park. A few families took the opportunity to have some fun sledging on the small hills in the park. There aren’t really many away-from-roads slopes in Hoylake and as a result Queens Park appears to the place to go for sledging in Hoylake and Meols.

As kids we used to sledge on the dunes on the Royal Liverpool with no problem but I don’t think you’d get away with it any more, walkers no longer welcome! There were a couple of great slopes though.

I can remember sliding down the hill in queens park. The hill seemed so big! I wanted to get out as fast as I could in case it had all gone by lunchtime.
      Happy Christmas everyone

Anyone else remember shuffling through the piles of frozen sea, like soap flakes, in their Timpson’s-bought wellies in 62-63?

Also, Mr Smith the milkman’s horse disappearing at sometime during that winter, too.

    Happy Christmas

I remember that winter 62/63 very well. I worked in Liverpool, in Kirkby to be exact- getting there was anightmare and no excuses about weather were accepted. One day the bus, a double decker, skidded and toppled over towards the pavement, its fall was broken by a tree. But it was SO cold while we waited for a replacement bus and I wished I’d worn “sensible” shoes or boots like my Mum told me to!!!

I remember walking out onto the frozen sea at Hoylake in the 1962/63 Winter and the huge slabs of iced saltwater left stacked at crazy angles on the shore by the previous tide which were great to slide down. It was a ready made natural playground for an eleven year old! I also remember carrying buckets of water to neighbours’ houses for weeks until the thaw, as our water supply was the only one at our end of Marine Road which was not frozen solid.

Good to get back to traditional winters again!

        Happy Xmas to all

I can remember the marine lake at West Kirby freezing solid, we could walk out over the boating lake at the Hoylake end.
I travelled to Edge Lane by motorbike! I saw a double decker bus to a 180 degree turn in front of me on the dual carriageway outside the Autmatic Telephone works. (the trick was to ride in the gutter, there was more grip there – a useful hint for todays weather).

In 1962/63 I was a pupil of “The Parade School. Just wondering if anyone has any photographs of the area during this winter. Or if anyone would like to share their experiences of that winter
