groveland avenue

Many thanks to Syd Bird for this c1900 image of Groveland Avenue, Hoylake. The view is to Grove Road with the long gone Grove House (where Grove Park is today) just hidden behind those trees. I did take a photo of the same road as it is today for a comparison but I seem to have loaded it somewhere obscure because I can’t now find it anywhere.

I see the conker (horse chestnut) tee is there in the centre of the road junction. I always wondered why it was in the middle of the road. Is it still there?

    Hi Peter,
The tree is still there in the junction, I happened to be walking past this afternoon. The pavement has been built out around the tree – an early form of traffic calming maybe?

I lived in Groveland Avenue in the 50’s and 60’s. I remember the tree in the middle of the road and often wondered why it was there. Now I know! Loved Grove Park and the Parish Hall, where as a teenager, my sisters and I used to dance the night away…usually to the Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers….wonderful innocent days!
Hoylake is a great town..look after it well.

I observe that there are several ex-pats who write into this website with their fond memories of Hoylake and their youth. I often wonder whether they wish they were still here.

    Hello Charles.

You can now stop wondering! At least on my behalf..

Have lived and worked in many Countries over the last 30 odd years and have loved some of them for their warmth, history and beauty…(South Africa, Lebanon, Argentina, Finland and Dubai etc) However, nothing compares to Hoylake in my view. Sometimes wish I were ‘back home” but I suppose the old place would never again live up to my expectations and lovely memories of living there, during the 50’ and 60’s.
    Best regards from Germany

          Hi Sarah,
It is my policy to NOT divulge information regarding “living” persons, particularly when they are members of this Web site. Therefore, I suggest that you try to contact Mandy Cook (nee Piercy)
on this Website. She (in conjunction with her Siblings) will decide whether to pass on information
to you via this Website or “off list”.
I hope you understand my point of view.
However I can tell you that I met Eddie Piercy some twenty years ago. He used to be the Verger of Holy Trinity Church in Trinity Road, Hoylake. When I met him, he was at St Hildeburgh Church.
<< He told me a number of things regarding my G'Grandfather William Trueman.
          1. He used to live next door to him in 39 Groveland Avenue (my G'Grandfather in 41)
          2. My G'Grandfather like many in Hoylake, had a nickname – Doggy Trueman !
          3. The Hoylake Fishermen used to attend Holy Trinity Church in Top Hats.
          4. A passage was laid down alongside the cemetery because the school children were nervous
about walking through the cemetery on dark nights.
          5. There used to be a Bethel at the end of Church Road and also a Morgue to hold the many drowned
people. He didn't know if Church Road was named after the Bethel or the later built Holy Trinity.
          6. One day, a Circus' vessel was wrecked on the beach, which was strewn with various drowned
animals. A memorial was erected in Holy Trinity Churchyard.
          7. Final Comment
Maggie Cooper married a Piercy ! Shock horror.!
          Ricky Cooper
PS Eddie Piercy was a lovely man with a lot of patience.

      Hi Ricky,

My name is Mandy Cook, formerly Mandy Piercy. I hope I can be of help to you by telling you that Eddie Piercy was my Dad. He did pass away unforunately in 1996 from cancer and although it is nice to hear that someone saw him in Hoylake 3 years ago, it really is impossible. I am one of the lucky ones along with my Sister Carol and Brother Eddie who have many many memories of him and Mum Lilian ( Lily ) . I am proud to hear how well he was thought of and if I can be of help to you I would be more than willing. Being the youngest, if I cannot remember, I am sure my family can help too.
      Regards

      Mandy.

OK – so we both know that Maggie Cooper married into the Piercy Family and produced a son.
We also both know that this son married Ellen Woods from Groveland Avenue. He was a Storekeeper at the time.
What I didn’t know was that this “son of Maggie Cooper” ran off to Ireland with another young lady.
To pursue this avenue, you will certainly have to contact the Piercy Family.

      Ricky Cooper.

Just a correction.my natural mother was Ann may piercy not Christine Ellen. That was my birth name. It does get confusing. Joy Beresford.

It is a shame I am not seen as a sister to Tracey lomas and Barbara nee piercy just cos I was given away by Ann piercy in 1953. . tracing my natural roots is an eye opener. Joy Beresford.
