Some Hoylake locals are planning forthcoming street parties for the Royal Wedding, the Big Lunch and perhaps the Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012. But Hoylake residents were having street parties years ago. The above images, kindly sent in by Ruth Treece show 1945 V.E. Day celebrations in Chapel Street. That curvy brick building in the road was an air-raid shelter I think and I’ve previously featured another photo of the same street party in this post.
If there are a few street parties happening in Hoylake for the Royal Wedding maybe I could put a map together? Leave a comment if you’ll be having sausage rolls, crisps and pop in your road this year!
So many children!
So few men :{
Hi everyone,
Friends of Grove Park are holding a celebration of the Royal Wedding on Friday 29th April 2011 in Grove Park starting with a community picnic at 1pm, there will be some entertainment and games for the children. This is a traditional event to bring together the residents surrounding Grove Park on a historic occassion. See the noticeboard in Grove Park for updates and please join the Grove Park facebook page for further information about the party, fundraising and meetings.
Chapel Road, i think the house on the left is Dolly Shipmans, she had an evacuee from Liverpool , a young teenager called Ted, who quite a few years later married Dolly`s daughter Dorothy, lots of locals will remember Ted and Dorothy running the D.I.Y.shop on the corner of Wood Street for many years. My Mum ,Dorothy Shakeshaft, was and still is best friends with Dorothy from their time at infant school, Market Street and West Kirby where they were referred to as `Shippy and Shakey`.
At last, a photo of an air raid shelter! I am still hoping for one of the shelters on Queen’s Park as it is now.
Any scouts agree that the Union Flag on the shelter is upside down?
Well a Guide agrees it is indeed upside down 🙂
Thanks Gail, that’s one for the girls, sorry I sounded like a misoginist and didn’t include the ladies in my question!
Haha!! Not at all Ian! I have to admit,it is the only thing I remember from Guides……..I knew it would come in handy,lol! 😀
Hi
Does anyone have any info regarding the old Carr Lane Residents Association and the history of Carr Lane.
I am looking into the history of the estate, including residential and commercial buildings.
I lived in George Road many years ago and I am intrigued to trace the development of the area.
Any dates, photos or info gratefully accepted
