A film comedy comes to Hoylake this month when Hoylake Community Cinema screens The Dish (12) on 27 April. The film, made in Australia in 2000, is based on real-life events of how the Parkes Observatory in New South Wales was used to relay live television pictures of man’s first steps on the moon. This event, in 1969, is memorable for Neil Armstrong’s words “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” However, The Dish uses fictional characters and changes historical detail to tell the story of how three Australian scientists and a member of NASA struggle to ensure that live TV pictures of the Apollo 11 moon landing are sent around the world. They achieve their aim, but only just in time….

HVL member Celia Hall said, “This film is the first true comedy shown by Hoylake Community Cinema. It is amazing that, in addition to our ‘regulars’, we see new people at each film, and I’m sure this one will attract even more. Audience numbers are now steady at between 70 and 90, many coming from West Kirby, Heswall and other parts of Wirral, so news is spreading.”

Doors open at 6.30 pm; the film starts at 7.30 pm sharp. There is a licensed bar, homemade snacks, and a quiz after the film, with prizes for the winner and runner-up. Hoylake Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing. Demand for tickets will be high, so early booking is advised.
