Friday Photo: Finnigan’s horse joins Jubilee party

No, not last week’s Diamond Jubilee, the Silver Jubilee in 1977!

Many thanks to Julian Triggs for unearthing a selection of photos capturing Hoylake celebrate the 1977 Silver Jubilee. Finnigan’s horse (of Finnigan’s Steak House fame) is pictured above in Lake Place – was that a shop on the corner of Rudd Street?

Julian comments:

“The two main events I remember and was participating in were the fancy dress (I was dressed up as Henry VIII, I still have my winning shield!) and the street party? at the chapel in Wood Street. Finnegan’s Horse was infamous around the village at the time as he/she was brought out regularly for local events. We also had bouncy castles in Grove Park but I have no pictures of that, but they were my first foray on bouncy castles which I loved every moment of.”

Here’s some more photos for you, including one at The Quadrant featuring NatWest Bank:

The street party photographs from Julian are not Wood Street Chapel – they look a bit like the Presbyterian church hall?

This photograph is definitely the Presbyterian church hall, I still have the paper plate, cup and serviette from the event and the commemorative coin my father gave us at the time. Great memories!

The horse is coming from Market Street up Lake Place .
The Shop it is passing is now a house but was then a Hairdressers.
Frank Sheridan kept the horse in his back garden I think!!

Yes, Finnigan (the horse… she was a mare) WAS kept some of the time in Frank Sheridan’s back garden.
I think I am driving her, here..

She was one feisty mare.. Very safe, but very opinionated!!

        Hi Julia,
Reference Frank Sheridan – I went to school with a “Frank Sheridan”.
He had a Cafe near Hoylake Railway Station.
He was in contention with the Council for building a Children’s playground alongside the Railway track.
At school, we were both in contention with the Film Crew at New Brighton when they were shooting “The Magnet”
Frank’s Dad also had a cafe in Old Chester Road by the Tunnel entrance. I remember spilling a large tin of white paint over his Dad’s car [ a large black Super Snipe Humber? ]
        “Some Mothers do have ’em”
So……could your Frank Sheridan be the same as my Frank Sheridan ?

Yes Ricky, that would be the same Frank Sheridan.
          Always avant garde.
His mum and dad had a lovely house in Prenton.
