Hoylake Community Cinema: Billy Elliot

Hoylake Community Cinema continues their year-long schedule of classic and independent film with the screening of Billy Elliot on Friday 29 June. The film, set during the miners’ strike of 1984-85, tells the inspiring story of 11-year-old Billy’s love of dancing and his dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer. However, Billy’s father has other ideas and wants him to learn boxing! Billy hates the sport and secretly joins the ballet classes being held at the local Sports Centre. When Billy’s father finds out, he forbids him to attend any more classes. But Billy carries on because his teacher believes he is talented enough to study in London at the Royal Ballet and arranges an audition. After many setbacks Billy finally gets to the audition and is awarded a place at the Royal Ballet. Billy’s dreams are fulfilled when, aged 25, he performs the lead in Swan Lake, with his family and dance teacher in the audience.

At the 2001 BAFTAs the film won Best Film, Jamie Bell won Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Julie Walters won Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Tickets for Billy Elliot cost £5 and are available from gift shop Urbane, Hoylake; The Parade, Hoylake Community Centre; on the door on the night; and online at www.hoylakecommunitycinema.co.uk. Doors open at 6.30 pm; the film starts at 7.30 pm. There is a licensed bar selling homemade snacks, and a quiz after the film, with prizes for the winner and runner-up. Hoylake Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing.
