Hoylake Community Cinema moves on to the tenth film in the year-long season with the screening of The Last King of Scotland on 27 July. The film, set in 1970, tells the fictional story of Dr Garrigan, a young Scottish doctor, who travels to Uganda and becomes the personal physician to dictator Idi Amin. The film is based on factual events, in particular how Garrigan takes charge of modernising Uganda’s health system and whether it was true that Amin declared himself King of Scotland. It was well known that Amin would invent and adopt fancy imperial titles for himself. However, when Garrigan witnesses the true scale of the crimes perpetrated by Amin, the doctor has to find a way to escape from the country and expose the atrocities. Forest Whitaker (Amin) received critical acclaim for his performance and won Best Actor at the 2007 Academy Awards.

Doors open at 6.30 pm; the film starts at 7.30 pm. There is a licensed bar selling homemade snacks, and a quiz after the film, with prizes for the winner and runner-up. Hoylake Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing.
