Chris Boardman

Pictured above is Hoylake’s gold medal Olympian, cyclist Chris Boardman.

Try as I might I can’t find a good photo of Chris Boardman riding a bike in Hoylake so I’ve plumped for the one above (source). Chris is captured riding his then, somewhat controversial Lotus Sport track bike at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where he won Gold in the 4,000m individual pursuit. Boardman, who still lives in west Wirral, retired from competitive cycling in his early 30s but has continued to be involved with GB cyclists, specifically with cycle research and development.

Ah but was he any good over the sand hills or the trails on Caldy hill? I bet I could have had ‘im on my trusty old stripped down 1976 (cowhorn handlebars as well) ‘Enfield’ boneshaker…OK, maybe not…

Not only competitors – Charlie Tranter from Meols was a diving judge – I can’t remember if he went to Rome or Tokyo – he was “Mr Hoylake baths” for many years.

Hoylake YMCA had a basketball team that went to the Olympics but I don’t know what year – but I’m sure someone will know which games

Basketball team details are on the plaque just inside the gate where the YMCA used to stand – go look (or you could just buy my book……………….!)

    Sorry, can’t oblige.
As a couple of ex-locals we used to ride, at our leisurely pace, along the prom occasionally to be overtaken by a flash that cheerfully said “Good morning” That was Chris, far too fast for us ever to be able to take a photo.
