Film Director Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid and Nancy, Walker), will be in Hoylake to attend the screening of Hoylake Community Cinema’s next film, For a Few Dollars More, on 26 October. Alex was born in Bebington and currently lives in the USA, teaching film production and scriptwriting at the University of Colorado. He will host a Q&A session after the film when the audience can find out more about working with Hollywood A-list actors including Ed Harris, Emilio Estevez and Dennis Hopper; musicians including Joe Strummer (The Clash); Debbie Harry (Blondie) and Elvis Costello; his experiences of the big studios and distributors and his subsequent graduation towards low budget and independent film making.

Alex said: “I’m looking forward to revisiting my native turf and to supporting a Wirralian community cinema. This is quality on a shoestring and surely what cinema should be about.”

Hoylake Village Life spokesperson, Mark Howard, said: “This is a big event for us and we think it will attract attention nationwide. On a whim I contacted him to ask if he was free to attend one of our screenings, and was astonished to get a reply saying he would be in the UK at the end of October and would love to come to Hoylake!

I know Alex was greatly influenced by the work of Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah, so when he said For a Few Dollars More was, in his opinion, one of the best examples of the Spaghetti Western genre, it was impossible to resist showing that film to coincide with his visit. I would urge anyone interested to book well in advance; places are limited. Oh, and try to watch Fistful of Dollars beforehand at home!”

Amy Hardman, Centre Development Manager at The Parade, Hoylake Community Centre, said: “This is truly amazing and will be one of the most high-profile events in this year’s calendar. It will, without doubt, be a sell-out. It is heartening to see Hoylake Community Cinema going from strength to strength.”

For a Few Dollars More, starring Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef, is the second film in the so-called “Man With No Name” trilogy, following on from A Fistful of Dollars and ending with The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The film sees Eastwood and Van Cleef join forces to capture homicidal bandit Indio. Both the Eastwood and Van Cleef characters are given understandable motivations for their bloodletting tendencies, something that was lacking in A Fistful of Dollars. Leone’s tense, tight close-ups, pregnant pauses, and significant silences have since been absorbed into the standard Spaghetti Western lexicon; likewise, Ennio Morricone’s haunting musical score has been endlessly imitated and parodied.

There is a pyjama crèche for parents who would like to leave their children in the care of CRB-checked childminders while they watch the film. There are a variety of games and activities available to keep children occupied. A charge of £5 per child is made for the crèche. Hoylake Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing.
