Waxing ordeal for churchwarden Tom

Tom Lang is preparing to suffer in the cause of little children. He is to undergo a hair-removal waxing over his whole body – well, most of it – at the hands of his wife Kathey, a beauty therapist, in aid of the BBC Children in Need appeal.

Kathey faces a major task. She said: “Tom is 6ft 6in tall and has a ‘fur coat.’ But he has drawn the line at the hair on his head, his eyebrows and one or two other bits.”

The BBC Children in Need day will be on Friday, November 16, but the great waxing will begin on Thursday the 15th – “It might be too much to do in one go,” Kathey says.

Tom is appealing for people to support his suffering by sponsoring him on forms at St Hildeburgh’s Church, Hoylake, where he is an assistant churchwarden and Kathey leads the Sunday school, or online at https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/thomaslang1

Tom, a driving instructor, will be 40 a few days after his waxing ordeal. He joked: “I really will be celebrating in my birthday suit!”

Kathey, who is 43, retrained as a beauty therapist after 24 years in the NHS as a staff nurse and then a manager. She holds NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy from Wirral Metropolitan College, is studying for Level 3, and is now launching her own beauty therapy business, Kathey’s Beauty, from the couple’s Hoylake home providing appointments at a time and place to suit her clients.

Her qualifications range from waxing and spray tanning to pedicures and facial massage.

She said: “I feel there is an overlap between beauty therapy and nursing – making someone feel better about themselves really helps in healing. It is crucial to always treat people as individuals, with dignity, regardless of their age, appearance or disabilities.

“It is very important to me that my clients feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the treatment. One of my aims is to provide beauty therapy services to people who cannot get to a salon because of mobility difficulties, being in a wheelchair, housebound or in a residential care home.”

For more details contact Kathey on her business number, 07526-266943.
