A film once famously described as “the mother of science fiction movies” is next up for Hoylake Community Cinema with the screening of the classic Fritz Lang 1927 film Metropolis on 30 November. The film is widely regarded to be the most important and influential ever made; films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Wars, and Blade Runner would not have been made had Metropolis not existed. In 2008 a print of Lang’s original cut of the film was found in the archives of the Museo del Cine in Argentina. After a long restoration process the restored film was released in 2010, and it is this cut that is being screened.

Set in 2026, the city of Metropolis is home to a Utopian society where its wealthy residents live a carefree life. One of those is Freder Fredersen. One day he spots a beautiful woman with a group of children, but she, and the children, quickly disappear. Freder follows her and is horrified to find an underground world of workers who apparently run the machinery that keeps the above ground Utopian world functioning. One of the few people above ground who knows about the world below is Freder’s father, Joh Fredersen, the founder and master of Metropolis. Freder learns that the woman is Maria, who wants to join the “hands” – the workers – to the “head” – those in power above – by a mediator, or the “heart”. Freder is convinced by Maria’s plan and decides to help the plight of the workers in the fight for a better life.

Doors open at 6.30 pm; the film starts at 7.30 pm. There is a licensed bar selling homemade snacks, and a pyjama crèche for parents who would like to leave their children in the care of CRB-checked childminders while they watch the film. There are a variety of games and activities available to keep children occupied. A charge of £5 per child is made for the crèche. Hoylake Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing.
