Hoylake Community Cinema: Kes

kes‘

KES’ (PG)

Friday 25th January, Hoylake Community Centre, Hoyle Road, Hoylake
Doors open: 6.30, film starts: 7pm.

Hoylake Community Cinema is kicking off the New Year with a screening of Ken Loach’s cult classic ‘Kes.’ Adapted from the Barry Hines’ novel ‘A Kestral for a knave,’ the film is rated seventh in the BFI’s top ten British films and tenth in their list of 50 films you should see by the age of 14.
Set against the backdrop of 1960’s Yorkshire, this social-realist tragedy centres around 15-year-old Billie. Bullied by his elder brother and ridiculed by his teachers, the working-class teenager’s outlook is bleak. He has little self-esteem or confidence and his greatest fear is that he will end up working in the mines as both his father and brother before him have done.
However, things turn around for Billy when he finds a baby kestrel. He becomes devoted to the bird, and spends all his spare time nurturing and training it. For the first time in his life, Billy has something to care about.
However, tragedy is around the corner….
This gritty and powerful drama succeeds in mixing humour with heartbreak and audiences won’t fail to be moved as they follow Billy on his journey. Certainly not one to be missed.
Tickets cost £5 and are available from Urbane Market Street, Staacks Banks Road, West Kirby and Hoylake Community Centre.
Also available online at www.hoylakecommunitycinema.co.uk or on the door on the night. Hoylake Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing.
A licensed bar and homemade snacks will be available and we will also be holding a quiz with prizes.
Continuing with the Loach theme, next month will see us screen the equally powerful ‘Wind that Shakes the Barley.’ Get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

STOP PRESS: We are thrilled to welcome actor Dai Bradley, who played one of the most iconic roles in British Cinema history, that of Billy Casper in Kes, for the screening and to answer questions after the film.
