An English Coney Island

I emailed myself a link ages that I’d forgotten all about until this evening. Somehow, I can’t remember now, I found an article in the free archives of the New York Times (official site) about Hoylake back in June 1883. You can read the archive in pdf (you’ll need a pdf reader if you haven’t got one) format by clicking here. Funny what you find on the internet 🙂

Well, that’s a dramatic tale for sure, some writer’s licence me thinks!

What a strange tale- very peciliar style of writing even allowing for the date.
I hadn’t realised that the Municipal golf course used to be a race course as mentioned. Is this correct?
Whiled away some time on a cold, snowy afternoon in Hampshire.

No, the article is about the Royal Liverpool and that was the race course.

(By the way, Sue, are you related to Mike Vine from Sandtoft in Alderley Road? I used to help him with the gardening in the 1970s to earn cash as a teenager. My mum ran a B&B in Curzon Road and she and Mike would send each other overflow guests.)

          Hi
Yes Mike was my Dad. I am the eldest of 3, my brothers Andy and Pete both went to Calday school. Sandtoft was our family home from early ’50s until we all grew up and “flew the coop”. I’m the only one still in UK- and left Hoylake long ago. My parents, Mike and Peggy, stayed at Sandtoft till around 1979/80 when they retired and bought a house in Melrose Avenue- Dad died in 1986 and Mum in 2004.
I like to see what’s going on in Hoylake but haven’t been back there since Mum died.
          Sue

Similarly, left long ago but pop back when I have the chance. It was a great little place to grow up.
