Friday Photo: Town Hall Gardens

town hall gardens

Here we have an old image of the Town Hall Gardens kindly sent in by Syd Bird.

These public gardens were in Albert Road, behind the Town Hall and were probably on the site of the old fire station (currently Jack Rabbits). You can make out the original fire engine house in the left of the photo.

Can you offer any additional information on these old gardens? Do you know when the fire station was constructed?

I don’t know when the fire station was built, but it must have been after 1911. In the summer of that year, Frank Wolsey and Wilson James presented their ‘Concert Parties’ in the Town Hall Gardens for a few weeks until their Lighthouse Pavilion (later Winter Gardens) was finished.

Guess the newer fire station must have been built 1920s / 1930s – probably the latter as it’s a bit of a classic neo-Georgian type building, along the same lines as the ex-post-office in West Kirby…..

The Albert Rd fire station opened in 1898 but there was an earlier one as Hoylake had a fire engine from 1885.
The later station on Grosvenor Rd opened in July 1930

    Hello S Ryan
Having read your comment about the later Fire Station being open in July 1930 on Grosvenor Road Hoylake I wonder if it was in Charles Road instead as that had an entrance into a large yard were their Horses could have been stabled as Charles Road runs parellel with Grosvenor Road.
