Friday Photo: Lighthouse from Queens Road

lighthouse Queens Road view

This week I’d hoped to publish a view from the beach, looking over to Hilbre Island and Wales with an imposing, dark grey sky above. However, it seems the photos I took this morning on my trusty Nokia decided to look very wrong!

So, I’ve given you an alternative view instead …still of questionable quality I’m afraid! It’s the old lighthouse in Valentia Road of course, taking in the view from Queens Road.

You can of course see how grey the sky was. That was at around 9.30 this morning and in fact it didn’t rain until about 6 this evening. If you’re not local then you haven’t been missing much weather wise as it’s been changeable at the very least! It hasn’t actually rained that much but we’ve had some very dark skies over the last couple of weeks.

Anyway, despite the cloudy skies over to Wales (it was bright over Liverpool) the beach was great this morning …there was only me and the dog there!

Maybe this is a suitable forum to ask the question of local historians – I’m aware of the origin of ‘The Kings’ Gap’, however lurking in the mists of my memory is a vague notion that there is a Hoylake link with George Washington (yes, that one) or at least his family? Does anyone have any information on this or am I just confused?

Thanks very much to Syd Byrd who gave me the reference for this – the Hoylake Free Press printed a number of articles in the early Twentieth Century – page 11 has the George Washington story (a hoax unfortunately)!
    Thanks again Syd:

    Thanks Andy!

The rumour I had heard years ago was I think that the family had set sail from Hoylake or Meols – until Diane posted I had never heard of the residence story. I wonder if the ‘The Elms’ story morphed into the sailing rumour or whether one is true, and one a fabrication?

Check Sulrave, North Hampshire birth place of George Washingtons father, then went to the Colinies, where George was born.
