In last weeks photos about the Hoylake hotel adverts, the old Broomfields building was mentioned. I do now remember the place when it was a restaurant – it had a white sign outside with a sketch of the building. Anyway, thanks to Syd Bird I can now show what the old place looked like. I think this photo dates back to early 1900 and as you can see the roundabout hadn’t been constructed.
I don’t know what was going on in Hoylake that particular day but it does seem to be rather busy. If you click on the photo a larger version is opened – is it me or are there a couple of people in centre of the photo who look like they could be in a walking race or something? And there’s a chap carrying a flag or something with a star type pattern on the back of his jacket? Could it be something to do with horse racing maybe??
And to complete the old hotel history here are a couple more adverts that may well jog a few memories. Click for a larger

It is so sad that Mike Storry passed away so recently because he would have been so thrilled that the hotel in Stanley Road was being “talked-about” as he had very happy memories of living there.
With reference to John’s comment about horse racing – I seem to think that Hoylake had a race course at one time and if this is the case I’m sure someone will have recall about it.

wasn’t Broomfields used as a health centre in the 60’s
I remember registering my son as a new baby there for his check ups and Cynthia Lennon was in front of me registering Julian – May 1962

The name of the property was actually Broomfield not Broomfields and I remember going there with my new baby sister for regular weighing! The plot of land next to it was a field for many years until the present church was built in the late 60s (???)- was that originally attached to Broomfield I wonder?

was there a dentist there?
Margot Triggs Page says
In answer to ‘Dave’s’ question ‘was there a dentist there’? I seem to remember being sent to the dentist up at Broomfield for a filling when I was at Market Street School. I walked all the way up there from school chattering away to a friend only to bump into a lamp post I didn’t notice. I recall sitting in his chair with a crater somewhere in my mouth and a huge egg on my forehead!!

Yes for a time it was the school dental service building and what is rather coincidental(sorry) the owner of the restaurant which replaecd the clinic was a dental nurse in a previous occupation

“Corcreighan” Private Hotel was my Grandmothers Mrs T Thompson’s . I was so excited to see this photo, as my mother migrated to Australia when I was 8yrs old. And I could remember my Grandma’s place but had no photo’s.
Thank you.

Hi I used to live in Broomfield in the 70s/80s. My mother bought it and changed it into a restaurant. Her name was Marjorie Hani which later was Marjorie Harding after she married Eric Harding from Hardings coaches. We also housed an artist in there. I loved that building and I was devastated to hear it had been knocked down. Afterwards my mother managed the Punch Bowl.
