I’ve got three follow-up photos for you all today, starting with an old view of Hoylake:
Thanks to Gail Lowther for sending in this scan of an old view of Hoylake. Gail and her neighbour Meg Parkes reckon its a view taken from around the middle of Queens Road. You can just make out an old tennis court net there by the looks. If that’s the lighthouse that still stands in Valentia Road then those houses you can see must be in Kings Gap …or have I got my bearings wrong?
Next up is another view of the MV Red Hand ship that we discussed recently:
Thanks to Syd Bird for finding this one in his archives – I especially like the old car out on the beach. Though driving a car out on to the sand at Hoylake is not something I’d recommend doing today.
And finally for our hat-trick of photos today is one with a theatrical theme from Ian Powers:
Ian writes:
I used to do the lighting for Hoylake YMCA pantomime. This photo is of Jenni Flashman and Ian Hawes. Jenni was playing “Witch Hazel†in Hansel and Gretel staged in 1973. Jenni is of course the girl on the right of the swimsuit picture in the The Camera Loves You post! The scenery was painted by our regular scene painter, Keith Huddlestone, sadly no longer with us.
Some great old images there! Feel free to post your comments and as always old or interesting photos of Hoylake are warmly welcomed.
Peter Wilson says
A very interesting photo of the lighthouse. How gloriously open and rural Hoylake was then. Is there a date for this picture? I am guessing itwas taken in the 1880s or ’90s. The houses look to be the pair of semi-detached Georgian style houses on Valentia Road seen from the rear and the smaller one is the Hough’s house on the corner of Queen’s Road. So, yes the photo would be taken from the area now occupied by Queen’s and Cable Roads between Valentia and Marine Roads.
Trevor Powell says
I think this photo was taken from somewhere behind my house on Queens Road at No. 42 which is one half of a semi, built in 1898 and called Perak Villas. So the photo probably does date from the 1880s or 90s.
