Another super view of Market Street of bygone times kindly sent in by Paul Doleman.
The view is of the top end of Market Street with Dents Cafe (or Dent’s Cafe, I can’t quite see an apostrophe) in focus. That particular building has been a restaurant of various guises over the last few years (Ruby, Boulevard, Tenderloins) and is currently called Monte Carlo. The shop frontage hasn’t actually changed too much with the windows and street canopy still intact.
Anyone care to put a date to this photo?
1900’s Signs of horse dung in road. No motor cars visible. The lamp post appears to be gas?
Yes i think it´s probably taken around the early 1900s, i used to live just above the cafe later in the 80s,
I would hazard a guess that it was 1906 as there are a few others in the series from the Hoylake Photographic Society. See here :- http://my.pho.to/westwirral/s2/albums/old_hoylake_and_meols/index.htm
Elizabeth Dent Lived at 22 Market Street. On the 1911 census, Her occupation is listed as Confectioner & Restaurant. She is not at this address on the 1901 census so this would place the photo between 1901 and 1911.
