Friday Photo: A summer’s morning on the jetty

To wrap-up our series of jetty-themed photos here are a couple of good images from the Syd Bird archives.

Above is an old image of a busy beach, presumed to be taken from the Trinity Road jetty. Note the lack of buildings along the promenade.

And below is a good photo of the jetty, taken in the 1960s by Syd.

Back in about 1990 (OK, I can’t remember the exact date!) I wrote to Geographers, the relevant publishers, to alert them to the fact that the Trinity Road jetty had fallen down/washed away/been removed about 25-30 years earlier but guess what? Yes, it is STILL shown in the CURRENT Wirral and Liverpool A-Z’s…hmmmmm

I remember going down to the prom one morning, wearing my best clothes – with the warning that I must keep them clean! As part of our adventures on the beach, we often walked to the end of the jetty and jumped off onto the sand-banks at the end. It was great to paddle in the clean pools left by the tide. Between the sand and the shore was a wide area of thick, smelly mud. We suddenly realised that the tide was approaching at speed. As a result of this, there were ever-growing channels cutting off the jettty as any possible return route. At that moment, the coast guard appeared at the end of the jetty, insisting that we had to wade through the mud straight away to return to the beach. What a decision! Should I save my life by wading knee deep through the mud – thus spoiling my best clothes and then facing the wrath of Mum? – Well, I’m still here!!
