hoylake pirate boat

Not to be outdone by New Brighton, Hoylake now has its own pirate ship too!

The above “pirate boat” is located on the corner of the grass square next to the lifeboat station and although constructed in advance of the Festival of Firsts, she’ll be there for as long as. She’s made from old tree branches, pallets and scrap timber held together with rope (see below), screws and nails and seems pretty sturdy. The pirate ship has been constructed by the same men who built the one in New Brighton.

It looks like I took that snap during dusk one evening, rather than on a sunny afternoon …seems I’m photographically challenged, so apologies for that. Anyways, go down and have a look at it for yourself, or like I did, climb aboard!

As a resident of North Parade very close to the Old Baths it has been fascinating to see how this wonderful vessel/art installation has developed over the past couple of weeks. Coming home from work one evening to see the deck made of pallets and then to see the masts and rigging being installed has been an experience not just for myself and my wife but so many others who live on or near to or use North Parade and the beach for relaxation and/or recreational purposes
Sitting outside my house I can see the fascination and enjoyment that so many children (both young and old!) are having looking at the ‘pirate ship’. I have seen large numbers of people climbing on board, playing/make believe and taking photos using this great art installation.

Will it still be in place for Lifeboat Open Day, 26th August? If it is I’m sure someone will have to operate a queuing system with time limits for those on board.

Well done and congratulations to all involved with this installation. I hope that the rest of the this years Festival of Firsts is as much appreciated by the public at large but especially the local residents as it seemed to be last year.

How marvelous it would be to rebuild the dear old outdoor baths , with great views to Hilbre and the Great Orme. All the “Opera` class yachts lying at their moorings. Dick Bird`s launch, complete with central cabin and great wicker chair on the stern. Several nobbies waiting off Dovepoint to land their catches of dabs, codling and whatever! Those really were the days!!!!
Oh yes! When the contract for the season was
