Friday Photo: The Ship Inn

ship inn

I found this old photo of the Ship Inn on yelp and apparently it captures the pub as it was in the 1930s.

The associated caption reads: “to the [immediate] right of the main entrance is one of the Hoylake Fire Brigade’s Fire Call alarms which was installed here and at the Railway In Meols in September 1912” …wonder how many drinkers stumbled out of the pub and thought is was a good idea to raise the alarm!

I think I spotted some old Birkenhead Brewery signage down by Hamilton Square the other day …I can’t remember what brewery the Ship is currently tied to (and that’s all set to change anyway)?

The building hasn’t changed too much over the years I suppose. Any other photos of the Ship gratefully received.

My great Aunt Alice worked behind the bar in the Ship in the late 60’s and early 70’s. I have very vague recollections of her – but think her surname must have been Wright. Anyone remember her?

Alice was a wonderfully cheerful person. She would take your order in the lounge at the back of the pub and bring it over to your table with a never failing smile…

Everyone knew her simply as Alice. Arthur Daws.

Alice served at the bar in the small lounge at the back of the pub. She would always bring your drinks over to the table with a cheerful smile.

She was known to everyone simply as Alice, even to youngsters who were just starting to visit pubs..

Lovely old photo. Appearing in the” History of Hoylake in 50 years” written by Charles Roberts in
1914 – 1915 it mentions the connections of our family, Brosters, that the Croft family originally owners of the property, sold it to the ”Brosters” and the late Joseph Broster, my Grandfather, Farmer of Market Street, transferred to the present owner, of which is not mentioned.

    Hi,
I am aware that this is an old thread but hope that someone can help me. My Mum passed away in January. I am trying to find out as much as I can about her childhood and the more I learn the more meringues I become. Mum moved to Hoylake when she was 11 years old in 1936 and my Grandad became a CoastGuard there. I have found photos of a row of 4 White Coast Guard cottages where I imagine she lived. I have discovered that the Wintergardens cinema was directly behind the cottages on the main road. I have discovered Hilbre Island and read about the many challenges that it must have given my Grandad in his job. My problem is that most of the buildings seem to have been knocked down and replaced. I wonder if anyone has a local map or overhead picture which shows the relation of all of these buildings to one another. Thanks in anticipation of your help. Mum loved Hoylake but left after she married in 1948.
