Friday Photo: A Moostery

cow head

Okay, so here’s a little mystery for you …or perhaps not!

Todays photo is of a cows head as you can see. It’s actually one of a pair of adornments you’ll find on a building in Hoylake. But the questions are:

  • what building is this cows head on?
  • what did the building used to be?
  • a very nearby building used to host a social club of sorts – what was the name of that club and how did it get it’s name?

I’ll let some comments build up (I hope) before I provide the answers. If you were the inspiration for this post then you can’t join in 🙂

Many years ago there was a butchers shop located between Lake Place and Wood Street belonging to Smith&Co . I`ve just been looking at an old photo of it and there are a couple of cows heads high up on the front of the building.

Syd Bird is very close, The shop was a butchers as far as I can remember, the butchers name could have been Binner and his brother had an electrical shop across the entry and next to Veals. The Club was I think called The Jigger Club.

The butchers became a pet shop then Pramcotts before the florist.

    Hi Everyone!

Well, in the first instance thanks go to Jackie Hall for prompting me to publish this photo and mentioning the long gone social club.

Yep, the pair of cows heads can been above the old Anns Florist shop and I gather that the shop used to be a butchers …Binner’s I believe. There’s a little entry to the right of the shop and you’ll see what looks like a brick outhouse. We guess that these buildings were orginally used for preparing/storing meat?

Jackie tells me that this building used to host the Jigger Club (jigger meaning entry) and regulars used to meet up to play cards, etc. It’s all private property now and the entry has gates across it to keep out unwelcome guests.

    Thanks for all the replies!
