I’d never noticed until the other day just how many chimney pots there are on the roof of the Plasterers Arms!
I took that photo yesterday morning …I didn’t pick a very bright morning morning did I?!
Hoylake trivia question for you: What does it say on the sign that hangs above the entrance door? Answer here.
How many of us remember having a working fireplace in our bedroom? (or even the Bathroom – if you lived in a really big house).
When I was ill in bed, my mother would transfer half the fire from the kitchen grate upstairs on a coal shovel. It would stink the house out and certainly not pass today’s Health and Safety laws! That was when we lived in Manor Road.
Mr Clarke delivered the coal “Two sacks please, and not too much slack if you don’t mind” although a good shovel full of slack gave you a chance of the fire staying lit until morning when a poke with the poker might liven it up.
I am the current landlady at The Plasterers’ Arms public house, regarding the photograph of all the chimneys at the pub, there is a fireplace in the main bar area ( sadly converted to a gas fire) and a fireplace in the snug, which we reinstated as a working fire in 2007, there is a chimney breast in the front bedroom, though interestingly, no corresponding chimney in the bar. the original building was a single storey off – sales area.
There are also chimneys at the rear of the pub – but I have yet to discover the corresponding fireplaces!!!!
Omg>>>how nice to see this pub. Its been 20 years since I was in there with my family toasting my father who had passed and we had brought his ashes home from Canada. My cousin Ronnie Jones took us all there for a sherry. He showed me my grandfathers seat in that pub , apparently it was his place to go. Thank you so much for the memories. Anita
ANITA ROWLANDS
Dear Anita, You mention your cousin Ronnie Jones. I am sure it is the same Ronnie Jones with his sister Barbara. They lived over Waterworths green grocers shop in Market Street Hoylake. Our back door and their back door were in Charles Road just at the back of Waterworths. We all used to play together out in the street. I think their father’s name was Tom. I was Helen Jones my sister’s names were Carol and Barbara.
Bye for now
Helen.
Ian – oddly enough I’ve come full circle and now have a working fire in my basement master bedroom here in Canada!
Yes that is him.my uncles name was Tom and my aunts name was Joyce. Ronnie and his wife live in uptown now. They have a son and daughter.
