Question For You

Not quite Hoylake related…

Does anyone know if the grassed areas either side of Roman Road, Meols (prom end) used to be a pitch and putt golf course?

Someone has asked the question and I’ve no idea. Please leave a comment !

…well, I moved to Meols in 1975 and it certainly wasn’t a pitch-and-putt then, but I’ve often wondered what (if any) purpose the grassed area served, other than looking nice.

…and wasn’t there an odd sort of ‘summer house’ on the prom opposite? Is that still there? It seemed a bit out of place, on reflection, unless it was located near something else.

Richard, I’m guessing you mean the shelter on the promenade opposite the end of Roman Road?

Still there, sometimes with perspex in the “windows” and sometimes without.

    Regular reader Jackie offers…

“The Pitch and Putt you refer to we believe to be the one which was for years on the grass by Sandfield Road and Roman Road and there was a building on it which we think was the pay hut”

So, there was a pitch and putt in Meols !

I don’t remember anything in Roman Road area during my chldhood (b. 1960). But there used to be a good pitch and putt in Queen’s Park which certainly survived into the ’70s and maybe the early ’80s. In fact there used to be lots of good things in Queen’s Park and putting in the nearby Meols Parade Gardens but both look in a sorry state now. It’s disgraceful that they were deliberately run down for so long. Maybe the public works the government is talking about to boost the economy can include finance for the Hoylake & Meols promenade upgrading projects?

    Hi
I agree with Jackie- ( would that be Jackie Reeves?) the putting course was exactly as she describes it .
There have been so many changes with the parks etc in Hoylake and Meols- none of which appear, as far as I can see an improvment.
The photos on you current link show just what a busy vibrant place it used to be.

I can also confirm that there was a putting green fenced off on the grass patch to the Hoylake side of Roman Road. Not far from there (between Roman Road and Sandhey Slip) the Promenade collapsed some time during the ’50s and Land and Marine were employed to fix it.
Coronation Park between the Cottage Hostpital and the Catholic Church was sandhills before being converted to a park, and I remember the air raid shelters which were on there. Anyone got any photos of the shelters? Also there was a set of shelters behind St John’s school in Meols: again, photos anyone?
I am guessing that the Pitch and Putt and separate putting green at Coronation Park made the Roman Road putting facility redundant.
