Whole Lot Of Holes

promenade holes

There are an awful lot holes in the promenade pavement at the moment!

Every few feet (2-3 metres) you’ll see a neatly drilled hole in the pavement. Thinking back I noticed lots of painted yellow markings a couple of months ago – I presume they marked the spot for the subsequent drilling.

So who has made them and why? It must be a survey of some sort?

On the topic of ground surveys do you recall years ago when one of the big oil companies invaded Hoylake and Meols (and probably elsewhere) with their very impressive white lorries to conduct a seismic surveys? How long ago was that and can you remember anything more about it?

I vaguely recall surveying in the estuary- way back ’60s or ’70s not sure- for oil. Does anyone else remember that.

I would say the holes are for injecting concrete mix to keep the sea defences strong.

Mike, I think you may well be right.

          Peter Carroll emailed to say:

I’ve spoken to the workmen last week when they were injecting the holes with concrete under pressure. Apparently rain water seeps through the pavement cracks and washes away the sand through the promenade walls. They told me eventually, after a few more years, there would be enough conrete to support the pavement to stop it from collapsing.
