Blooming Boat

flower boat

Thanks to Ian Davies (Hoylake RNLI) for sending in a photo of the boat that will be used for planting. Situated on the grass next to the lifeboat station the Hoylake In Bloom team (their latest news) will soon have this old dinghy looking blooming lovely.

Funnily enough, I took a photo of the boat myself on the day that Ian sent me the photo although the sack of soil hadn’t arrived at that point. As you can guess from the photo it wasn’t the nicest of days – the heavy raining making that area of open ground even more saturated.

Wouldn’t it be great if this area was better landscaped? It’s a great location offering lovely views all year round and I’d suggest it should really be one of Hoylake’s best public spaces. I know it’s a topic of discussion within Wirral Council,  so we’ll just have to watch this space.

I look forward to publishing another photo of the boat in the summer when the wind is light, the sun is shining and flower boat is in full bloom!

Yes, there is a great opportunity to create a better public space. It looks a muddy mess in the picture. I suggest the area be named ‘Hoylake Green’ and landscaping using beach sand and sand-dune flora.

Good luck for the planting but not an easy place to grow anything but the hardiest seaside plants!

Yes the boat does look a muddy mess in the photo fortunatly no one took our photo as we were a muddy mess too!we do have some photos we may share with you later.
Mike, Vicky and I have now bedded the boat in properly which was very difficult as the hoylake baths are buried under there! We are planning to plant seaside ornamental
grasses, valerian, fleabane and lots of thrift for colour then hope for the best. For now we have started with a few grasses that I overwintered, valerian from Vickie’s garden and primulas for early colour. We would rather wait a few weeks before we spend any money on planting.we agree it would be lovely to have native seaside flowers in the grass again we welcome any ideas and helpers

Isn’t it tragic that that piece of land now holds water better than the swimming pool it replaces!

think it would take a bit more than a planted up boat to inprove this site, also it being next to the eyesore that is the the rnli station, blot on the lanscape? worse than that

I passed through Hoylake last weekend and not only does the RNLI station look splendid but the planted-up boat looks great too not to mention the model boating pond. Great community efforts.
