Wind farm expansion approved

burbobank-windfarm-740

An expansion of the Burbo Bank wind farm in Liverpool Bay has been given government approval.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey has today announced (BBC) that eight renewable energy projects are to go ahead including an expansion of the Burbo Bank wind farm that you can see from Hoylake promenade.

You can read the background to the plans here and here. The existing off-shore wind farm consists of 25 turbines and the expansion will increase that to about 100 turbines (though I can’t find the exact figure online).

Dong Energy, the Danish firm behind the project, are currently proposing changes to the airspace above the wind farm as the turbines can interfere with aeroplane radar signals.

Your comments are welcome.

I would rather have an extension to the wind farm than Underground Coal Gasification which is experimental and could cause pollution which could damaging to public health and the environment as well as increasing climate change.

Totally agree – renewables versus yet another fossil fuel should be a no-brainer. Or put it this way – if we unthinkingly keep adding climate changing gases to the atmosphere (via UCG and fracking as well as all the ‘usual’ suspects), the probability of extreme weather events will continue to increase. Then, in a few decades – who knows the timescale, really? – there might not even be a Prom to contemplate the view from anyway …

Wind farms are not a good investment, as they give inconsistent output. I would rather see my rising energy bills going towards the cost of building new power stations, whether coal or nuclear, giving output around the clock. This is logic and reason. As for the concern over greenhouse gases, CO2 is only a minor player, the major one being water vapour all of which is produced naturally.
