The ever popular Hoylake Community Cinema has enjoyed a number of full houses recently, with a broad range of classic, independent and arthouse films pulling in enthusiastic audiences from across the region.
Film lovers are in for another treat this month with Powell and Pressburger’s A Matter of Life and Death (1946).
Returning to England through thick fog from a bombing run in May 1945, flyer Peter Carter’s plane is damaged; his parachute rendered useless. Carter (David Niven) shares his last words with June (Kim Hunter), a young American Air Force radio operator, before jumping to certain death, preferring this fate to burning up with his plane. However, he survives as a result of a ‘mixup’ in heaven.
“Conductor 71â€, an aristocrat killed in the French Revolution is sent to bring him back to ‘The Other World”, but by this time Peter and June have met and fallen in love.
This changes everything, and since it happened through no fault of his own, Peter figures that heaven owes him a second chance. Heaven agrees to a trial to decide his fate…
A strange and beautiful romantic fantasy with cutting edge effects, great photography and outstanding acting from the entire cast; A Matter of Life and Death is a memorable classic that is too rarely seen on the big screen.
There is a licensed bar with home made food open before and after the film.

Tickets cost £5 and are available from Urbane Market Street, Staacks Banks Road, West Kirby; Toast, next door to West Kirby train station and Hoylake Community Centre.
Also available on the door on the night. Hoylake Community Centre has full disabled access and is induction loop enabled for the hard of hearing. A licensed bar and homemade snacks will be available and we will also be holding a quiz on the night with prizes.
