Here are a couple of follow-up photos that you might like to see.
To begin with here’s a view of Sandhey slipway from 1967 kindly sent in by Julian Triggs. Please feel free to leave a comment if you recognise a car or yacht! Take a look at this photo for an older scene
And here’s the view along the promenade looking toward Meols.
Next up is another photo of the ladies of Melrose Bowling Club:
Mike Wilson says he believes this was published in the Advertiser or Birkenhead News in 1971:
back row- Mrs. G. Hall, Mrs. A. Neil, Mrs. B. Alsop, Mrs. E. Smith, president, Mrs. M. Smith, chairman, Mrs. V. Couchman, secretary, Mrs. S. Black, front row- Mrs. R. Worth, Mrs. G. Taylor, Mrs. E. Roberts, captain, Mrs. M. Scott, vice-captain, and Mrs. I. Wilson.
Melrose Ladies ‘A’ bowls team have won the Birkenhead and Wirral Ladies Bowling League title again.
In all they have won the championship cup seven times and have been runners-up once. This is the fourth consecutive year they have been champions.
In addition to this, one of their members, Mrs. May Smith, has won the New Brighton Ladies bowls cup which was competed for by more than 500 ladies in northern England. It is believed that this is the first time it has been won by a Hoylake player.
This reminds us how quickly the silting up of Hoylake continues. Sandhey has been superseded as the main slip for sailing by that at Dove Point and the Hoylake anchorage moves ever nearer to Wallasey!
I recognise “Pop” ,Mrs.Neil on the back row from when i was a very small girl, i remember she was the sister of my Gt. Uncles wife,…….as all us locals know, we are all related to each other somehow.!!!
If my failing memory serves me right, Mrs. Neil’s christian name was Alice.
As far as I can remember the ladies in this photo are:
Gertie Hall; Alice Neil; Beryl Alsop; Edie (or Elsie?) Smith; May Smith; Vi Couchman; Sally Black; Rose Worth; Gladys Taylor; Elsie Roberts; Madge Scott and our Mum, Isabel Wilson (Belle).
I remember all the ladies in the bowling photo, all correctly named by Barbara. My mum was Vi Couchman who eventually became President of the club and remained President up until her death in 2010.
Were you an Akela at Hilbre Cubs in Lake Place, if so, i was a young leader with you, i`m pretty sure i remember a Margaret Couchman being Akela. I was Judith Brunton back then and my sister-in-law Barbara Gill also helped.
This becomes more spooky by the minute. I was Senior Sixer in the Hilbre Cubs until joining the Scouts in 1953, Peewit Patrol. My patrol Leader was John “Copper” Roberts. I never knew the Cub leaders by their own names, only as Akela or Baghera. I remember well the day our new hut was officially opened by the then Chief Scout, Lord Rowallan. Our Scout Master was Geoff Bevan who lived in St. Margaret’s Road.
Mike
