Friday Photo: Threshers

threshers hoylake

And we’re back for 2017 – a belated Happy New Year to you all! Hope the year ahead keeps you happy and healthy.

Talking of shops, here’s an off-licence from the past!

Pictured is Threshers at the top of end Hoylake circa 1980-something. The photo was kindly sent to me by Anne Wright (formerly Maryon) who says: “…think it was taken some time in the 80s when my husband and I (Wally and Anne Maryon) managed the Threshers Off-Licence in Market Street, living above the shop. We were there for about 10 years and loved living and working in Hoylake.”

Can’t say I remember that cake shop next door but one but I do remember the Regency Restaurant entrance.

This particular Thresher branch closed in November 2009 – here’s an item from back then. There was another branch at the other end of the main road too.

Omg, I am the little girl on the roof! The shop was run by Wally and Anne (Wally, my dad, sadly passed away a number of years ago). I have so many happy memories of living in Hoylake as a child.

‘What’s that red button for Mum’?

…’DON’T press it, it’s in case we need the Police’…

    …’Ok’ said the young boy…

The button indeed did get the Police in attendance…

‘You Ok Anne? Said the Policeman’ as he walked in through the door…

Dear oh dear, I’m beginning to feel old. Because I remember when the off-licence was Mackie and Gladstone’s (even before it became just Mackies) and when they had a coal fire inside for heating. And the shop to the left was Allen’s confectioners and cafe above. The shops to the right, at the bottom of the Central Hall, were all part of Josephine Taylor’s (even the left hand one which was a wool shop) and then further round into Albert Road was the Manweb Electricity showroom, where you could also go to pay your electricity bill.

In early 70s the Hodgson family ran the off license. We used a room in the top floor for venture scouts meetings up to 78.
