Hoylake is all set for another Film Night as local volunteers unveil a whole programme of films throughout the year.

Local community group, Hoylake Village Life, organised their first Film Night in September, a showing of Nowhere Boy. Over 80 people attended and the response was so positive that the group is keen to show more films for the local community to enjoy.

The next film will be Regeneration, a film based on the novel by Pat Barker about the wartime friendship of two poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon.

The evening will feature some special surprises, provided by the Wilfred Owen Story, to celebrate the life and works of Wilfred Owen, who hailed from the Wirral and had connections with Hoylake.

Hoylake Village Life are organising the Film Nights as part of a wider initiative to provide more attractions for the local community to enjoy, and attract more people to Hoylake. Group member Mark Howard, 41, says “We had such a positive response from local residents to the last film, that we started organising the next Film Night straight away, and we will organise one every month!”

Vaughan Williams, Chairman of The Parade, Hoylake Community Centre, said, “After the first Film Night we were inundated with phone calls asking when the next film would be shown. Local residents felt that it was just like being in a real cinema, which is a huge compliment to the quality of facilities we have on offer at The Parade.”

Doors open at 6:30pm, when a fully stocked bar and snacks will be available. The bar will also be available after the film for people to enjoy and discuss the film.

Nowhere-BoyFilm lovers can enjoy watching films in Hoylake once more, thanks to a new Film Night being organised by local residents. Hoylake used to be home to two cinemas, one near the Promenade and one on Market Street, but these have long since closed. Now, local residents are keen to see films again in Hoylake, and have decided to do something about it.

The grassroots community group Hoylake Village Life (HVL) has organised it’s first Film Night, a showing of Nowhere Boy, the story of John Lennon’s early life, on Friday 30 September at the Parade Hoylake Community Centre.

Group member, Mark Howard, 39, says “a cinema is a huge attraction for any local town. We know we might not be able to attract a new purpose built cinema to Hoylake, but by showing films at The Parade, the local community can still enjoy the cinema experience without having to drive”. Mark added “for this to work on a regular basis we really need the local community to rally around and buy tickets for the event”.

Vaughan Williams, Chairman of the Parade Hoylake Community Centre, said, “We are delighted to be able to support the idea of film nights in Hoylake. This initiative fits in with our continued development of the Centre to provide a top class local venue. We have just completed a full refit of the lighting, sound
systems and projection for our main hall and are confident this will provide a great facility for the local residents to enjoy”.

This event builds on HVL’s list of community activities which include the annual Halloween Children’s Party (Saturday 29 October, 5 pm-8 pm at The Parade), and the forthcoming Saturday Morning Film Matinees for kids (mid October)

Hoylake 10K 2011

Hoylake 10K runners

This Sunday, September 18 sees the annual Hoylake 10K fun run take place. It’s a popular event with runners of all ability taking part and raising funds for the Wednesday Special Needs Club (website) that is based at Hoylake Community Centre. You can see all the entry details and race information on this page.

And if you’d like to help raise funds the Wednesday Special Needs Club then do visit this blog page of local photographer Colin McPherson as he is offering one of his photographs as a prize in an interesting guess-my-time fund-raiser.

If you’ve run the race route previously note that when you run up the steps to the path behind the embankment at Meols, the bumpy, hard mud path has been covered over with shale so it’s a bit easier to run on.
