Here’s a rare “colour tinted” photo of yesteryear Market Street kindly sent in by Syd Bird.

The scene is of Market Street with the entrance to Elm Grove (Cockle Alley) on the left and the entrance to the “old” Punch Bowl on the right.

The current Punch Bowl is still closed and is up for sale. According to this Wirral News item the premises has managed to retain a license following the non-payment of approximately £35,000 worth of gas.

It appears that The Punch isn’t the only Hoylake pub up for grabs at the moment. Scottish & Newcastle Pub Company is currently offering the Blue Anchor to new landlords with a required investment of £12,000.
